Theresa Hennessy, LCSW-R.

Theresa is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who got her MSW in 1993 from UAlbany. She has worked in the mental health field for over 19 years. She worked with children and adolescents for the first half of her career in outpatient services as well as in foster care, adoption and in a school setting. She took some time off to raise her own three children and returned to social work after her kids were in grade school. For the last 8 years, she worked in psychiatric rehabilitation with adults helping them to identify life goals and overcome barriers they would encounter in relation to their psychiatric diagnoses. Theresa likes to work with older children (10+), teenagers and adults (including seniors.) She strives to create an accepting, caring and therapeutic relationship that focuses on building both understanding and skills so that individuals are empowered to move themselves forward. Additionally, she likes to help people navigate life transitions and support them with developing acceptance when it is needed. Theresa likes to utilize humor, empathy, directness and compassion in her practice.

Theresa specializes in treating anxiety (in its different forms including OCD), depression and trauma. She also likes helping individuals to manage other psychiatric illnesses such as Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia and Borderline Personality Disorder. She has a DBT Certification and incorporates DBT skills into both individual treatment as well as DBT skills groups that she runs intermittently at BCA.
